Silent Spring

Silent Spring is an interactive artwork activated by "biocides" (water), where a town is slowly destroyed and washed away. This piece draws inspiration from Chapter 1 of Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring, where she argues that pesticides should be called biocides because they harm much more than their intended targets. In the story, biocides become the mysterious force that sweeps across the town, leading to its demise.

The work reflects Carson’s chilling observation: “the people had done it to themselves.” The viewer’s interaction with the piece becomes symbolic of this destructive cycle, where human actions perpetuate irreversible consequences. Through water’s ability to "activate" the destruction, the audience becomes a participant in the tragic unfolding of the town’s fate, mirroring the real-world impact of unchecked ecological harm.
